Thirumalai Ananthanpillai — the Puriśai ācārya-puruṣa line of the Hill, not the Nadadur house of Cheyyar

The ācārya of the Hill

The colophon of both hymns is the same: śrīraṅgasūriṇedaṃ śrīśailānantasurivaṃśyena bhaktyā racitam. Śrīśaila Ānanta Sūri is Ananthalvan. The descendant who signs himself Śrīraṅga Sūri is Puriśai Śrīraṅgācāri of Tirumala — Sri Ubhayavedānta Vidvān Thirumalai Ananthanpillai Purasai Srirangachariyar Svami, as T.A. Krishnamacharya names him.

Chatuś-śāstra paṇḍita, compared to Vasiṣṭha in anuṣṭhāna, chief sthala-ācārya puruṣa of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam. Puriśai here is the ācārya-puruṣa family of the Hill, one of the seven, recorded as descendants of Ananthalvan. They recite Divya Prabandham in the ghoṣṭi headed by the Pedda Jeeyangar, receive tīrtham after the Thollappacharya line, and keep the Madhurakavi shrine at Govindarāja’s temple in Tirupati. The village of that name in Cheyyar taluk is another Puriśai — Nadadur vamsam, a later Swami. This Swami is Ananthanpillai.

The Śrīnivāsa Gadyam is the hymn to the Lord of the Hill. Cūrṇikā 5 names the tank filled by Anantārya’s spring. Cūrṇikā 28 names the scar on the chin, made an ornament by the crowbar. The Lakṣmī Gadyam is the hymn to Padmāvatī. Its third verse is the campaka: she was playing at theft in the garden, Śrīśaila Ānanta Sūri bound her, and she chose her husband. The close of that hymn asks Lakṣmī Padmāvatī to accept what Śrīraṅga Sūri composed.

From Ārāyirappaḍi Guruparamparā, Rāmānujārya Divya Caritra, Vārtamālā, and the Itihāsamālā he published Śrī Veṅkaṭādri Śrīmad Anantārya Mahimākathā Saṅgraha in Sanskrit and Telugu, dated 1882. Ancestors of T.A. Krishnamacharya made a Manipravāla rendering. Krishnamacharya — vidvān and śiromaṇi, head of Nyāya at S.V. Oriental College, Tirupati — issued a Tamil Vaibhavam in 1959 through the TTD Bulletin. T.C.A. Ramanujam made the English this shrine reads. K.K.A. Venkatachari wrote the foreword. Aiyangar names MM. Srirangacharya of Tirupati as the scholar of the Telugu Itihāsamālā.
